I wanted to create a branding and marketing service tailored to the small business owner. One where they feel safe and comfortable. Where time and budget are taken into consideration. Where the process of defining their true brand story isn’t daunting and overwhelming, but as fun and exciting as the day they came up with their business idea.

Tatenda Mark (TM): Lexi, it’s such a pleasure to have you on Alumni Valley. So you’ll notice that we both work with small businesses, but you work on brand and marketing strategies for small businesses. How did you find yourself in the brand consultant niche market?
Lexi Frame (LF): Well my business was born out of pure frustration for small business owners.
In the last 5 years I have met so many people with amazing ideas and brilliant products and services, but hardly any budget to hire an ad agency to help them define their brand and market them.
I’ve had two clients in the logistics industry who got teary eyed and choked up when I read their new brand story to them.

Over and over again I’d watch these wonderful businesses die because they weren’t able to get the service they needed – branding and marketing. And not just any branding and marketing. The kind that is tailored to the small business owner – people with hardly any time, budget or an in-depth understanding of complicated marketing and branding principles.
Having been in advertising and marketing for almost 11 years, I wanted to change that. I wanted to create a branding and marketing service tailored to the small business owner. One where they feel safe and comfortable. Where time and budget are taken into consideration. Where the process of defining their true brand story isn’t daunting and overwhelming, but as fun and exciting as the day they came up with their business idea.
I have piles of feedback from the workshop and I’m going to use that to turn it all into book for small business owners called “Big Brand Thinking for Small Business Owners”.

So I sat down one day and made a plan. I spoke to as many small business owners as I could at the time – learning their real frustrations, concerns and challenges when it comes to branding and marketing. I created a branding workshop for a few more small business owners to help me learn even more. And then, I built my service around them.
I now help small businesses of all kinds, but I never stop learning!
TG: That’s awesome. I personally believe that a lot of these small businesses do find value in having a brand and marketing strategy but, like you said, they picture it as being daunting. It’s awesome that you then step in and provide a well-tailored service that they can find enjoyable, and that takes into consideration their budget. There must be a few challenges that you face though going about your business.
LF: What is a business without challenges! Here are some of mine 🙂
One of my biggest challenges was finding time and energy for everything in my business. It became overwhelming at one point. But I overcame this challenge when I adapted a “planning ahead” strategy. And by ahead, I mean a year in advance! I literally sit down at the beginning of the year and plan out every month – this means I never take on too much, I always know what I am doing and what I am working towards. I also review every month and made adjustments as I go along when new things pop up. Google sheets and Calendar are my lifesavers! P.S this is one of the services I offer 😉
Another challenge that comes to mind is what I like to call the “bad chemistry” challenge. There are business owners I have met where I know the chemistry isn’t right and the journey will be tough and unenjoyable for both of us. So I have to turn down the business. It’s tough to turn down any small business! But I always know it’s for the better.
TG: I like the integrity in that, turning down business when you know there’s “bad chemistry”. But let’s talk about the “good chemistry”, and the your some of your standout accomplishments.
LF: My biggest rewards definitely come from all the little moments I experience working with small business owners. I’ve had two clients in the logistics industry who got teary eyed and choked up when I read their new brand story to them. One of my clients is a small team and one session had us all so inspired and revved up I was buzzing for hours after. They are small victories, but they make every day worth it.
And then, remember the workshop that I spoke about earlier? Well, it was an 8-module course. It took me 4 months to create and I am SO proud that I made it, let alone finished it! I have piles of feedback from the workshop and I’m going to use that to turn it all into book for small business owners called “Big Brand Thinking for Small Business Owners”. Watch this space!
TG: Please put me on the pre-order list for the book! It’s lovely to have you on this platform. Before we part, do you have any words of advice to people who are looking to run their own business?
1. Create your service around the people you want to help – ask, never assume, keep learning.
3.Treat every single client as if it’s your first 😉
