I bought my new lion embroidered face cloth from Brigitte at the Conscious Living Fayre Market. She had remarkable embroidery designs (see photos), which made it hard for me to choose which design to buy. Her product line also included natural hand-crafted soaps that I thought would make for great gifts. – Tatenda Mark

Brigitte on how Palm Essentials started:

Due to my husband’s ill health I had no other option but to look for a position that provided a regular income. Once his health improved, the “independent bug bit me once again”.

By chance I came across a small manufacturer of good quality natural hand crafted soaps. As I did machine embroidery previously I decided to combine both.

Now I am a facilitator of good quality embroidered products such as towels, t- and golf shirts as well as hats and caps for kids and adults. Private individuals purchase my products at various craft markets. I also supply gift shops and companies.

Wherever possible I source products that are made in South Africa.

Brigitte on business challenges and advice:

My biggest challenge is to find and keep customers who do not try and bypass my services.

After only 7 months Palm Essentials is starting to break even. German to English and English to German translation support the new business.

Wherever possible I source products that are made in South Africa.

My word of advice to anyone who would like to start their own business:

  • Be persistent
  • Work with a plan
  • Have back up: financially and morally
  • Do not succumb to negative feelings if your success is not immediate
  • Remember: Rome was not built in one day!
