I have been impressed by how much Trudy Mkansi and her team at Ambesha Africa have managed to achieve in just six months of running their Furniture business. With clients like Tsogo Sun Palazzo Hotel, there is no doubt that their work is quality. But you won’t only find Ambesha Africa products in luxury hotels, their product line also caters to your typical household (pictures below).

It comes as no surprise that Trudy is one of the semi-finalists for the show Making Moves, which airs on SABC 1. We give her and her team our support and wish them all the best. This is one emerging company to look out for. – Tatenda Mark

Tatenda Mark: Thank you for taking time to chat about Ambesha Africa and the Home Decor business. Can you tell us a bit about Home Decor and how you got into it?

Trudy Mkansi: I’ve always loved home decor. I would play around with designs and rearrange close friends’ houses with what they have, giving the house a better look. That’s where the passion came from.

I would literally beg my friends to clean and decorate their houses. I would give the house a better look without spending a lot of money.

When things got bad at work I took it as an opportunity to pursue what I love.

Tatenda Mark: You have to admit  that pursuing what you love comes both with its ups and downs. What have been your ups and downs with Ambesha Africa?

Trudy Mkansi: The challenges are quite few since the team and I started the company with no finances… so every time we make a profit I buy equipment of which this is still a challenge.  Some of the things we still have to make manually. For example, we don’t have a table saw as yet, we don’t have aluminum staple guy but the biggest of them is a table saw.

What I’ve learned so far is that it doesn’t help to have excuses in life…if you sit and relax thinking that someone owes you, you will wake up and realize that time has passed by.

We outsource some of the services when I have bulk orders, for example cutting planks elsewhere. Another challenge is getting our products to be to couriered nationally. We get orders from different provinces but because of transport we don’t take some of these orders.

Tatenda Mark: It seems like the whole operation requires quite a bit of a team effort. How do you keep your team motivated?

Trudy Mkansi: I try to empower my staff; the ones that are very committed to the business can potentially get a small share of the company. I believe that employees that have shares in a company are guaranteed to be more dedicated and committed to the company.

Tatenda Mark: It seems as though you have learnt a lot of lessons since you started the business. Do you have any words of advice to people who are running, or looking to run, their own businesses?

Trudy Mkansi: What I’ve learned so far is that it doesn’t help to have excuses in life. We can blame our background, government, and on and on…but the fact remains that if you sit and relax thinking that someone owes you, you will wake up and realize that time has passed by.

I encourage everyone with a dream to take a first step and another step and another one towards their dream. It’s not easy but the more you knock the more you learn how to position the knocking.

What works for me is surrounding myself with people who have made it and are true to themselves… that’s how I discovered you.

When things got bad at work I took it as an opportunity to pursue what I love.

Pray pray pray.. at least you can hold God accountable. There is no better time to start than now.

What works for me is depending on my abilities while also looking for opportunities that can help me reach there quicker. This means that if I don’t get there quicker I know I will still get there with what I have.
