Yebo was set up by 3 artists (Pete, Aleta & Dane Armstrong) in 2011, they had been waiting for a great contemporary art gallery to open in Swaziland and when they realised it wasn’t going to happen they decided to invest their savings and set one up themselves!  Pete and Aleta had over 30 years of experience in the art and business world and setting up an art gallery was a dream they had always had. Dane had finished his studies and was ready to invest and work with assisting the youth in creative ventures. It has been a lot of hard work with many ups and downs in the initial years Click To Tweet But they refused to give up and were adaptable to changing circumstances. Yebo is now in its 6th year of business and doing well.

Yebo Contemporary Art Gallery is located in the Kingdom of Swaziland Click To Tweet Providing a much-needed platform for established artists, artisans and designers in the country to showcase and sell their work, as well as uncovering and assisting new artistic talent. Yebo aims to participate in a myriad of ways to facilitate the much-needed growth of the arts sector in Swaziland:

 • From the top down – Running an independent contemporary art gallery, shop & workshop

• From the ground up – Mentoring & developing grassroots artists and art projects

Providing a much-needed platform for established artists, artisans and designers in the country to showcase and sell their work, as well as uncovering and assisting new artistic talent.

The gallery is based on an ethos of transparency, thus all the artists are involved as much as possible so as to better equip them with an understanding of how galleries operate, how to price their work, how to market themselves, etc. It is also an important focal point for up and coming artists to be exposed to various art forms, and to get feedback on their work or ideas.

Yebo has its offices, showroom and workshop in Ezulwini. The showroom has work by the 15 artists Yebo represents. It’s a meeting place for artists, there is a library and workshop area for them to use. Yebo team also design and screen-print a range of products for their design shop at the workshop. Yebo also set up an NGO; Yebo ArtReach which has its offices there too. Click To TweetThe NGO hires local artists and works on creative projects with numerous organisations.

Their shop and small gallery is situated in Malkerns at the popular Swazi Candles Centre and is open seven days a week. There you will find paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs by their artists along with a quirky range of textiles, ceramics, cards etc. designed and handmade at Yebo’s workshop.
