There is no way you can walk past their stall and not take a second to admire or buy Romy and Anthony’s out-of-the-box designs. The artistic element, combined with the quality and precision of their designs, make for the best household accessories that will leave your guests demanding that you tell them where you purchased that  lamp with a copper frame and big Edison light bulb.

Tatenda Mark: Hi Romy, Antony. Your custom designs are really impressive. I see cement, copper, leather, wood designs; walk us through the journey of Plank.

Romy & Antony: Well, it really started after we matriculated. We both took a gap year and during this time, we needed to make a dog bed to accommodate my dog and her puppies. This was our first project. From here we began making tables and headboards from reclaimed wood, sourced from a construction site.

Antony has been using his hands since he was a young boy, I have always been interested in Interiors and fascinated in Architecture. Between the two of us, we make a complimentary team.

We followed our interest and continued to make and sell.

It was when we began with design school (Inscape College) that our newly named “Plank.” Took off. We started working with Cement, Copper, leather, and good quality reclaimed wood; using these materials we made small accessories, décor and lamps.

Work with an idea, develop it and if you come across a bump in the road, work around it. There’s always a way!

Things progressed from there. We started supplying to stores on consignment and had the opportunity to take part in our first market, and many more after that!

Currently we are supplying to The Stable, Cape Town and Culture box, Hout Bay. We also have a Showroom in Hout Bay showcasing most of our products.

Tatenda Mark: That’s really amazing, the fact that you are now supplying to established retailers.  I must say, looking at the quality of your products and the fact that you are here at the Made in Cape Market,  this must have been quite a challenging journey. Especially given that you two have just breached your twenties.

Romy & Antony: Definitely. We face a constant challenge of having to juggle between College, Plank and social life. Having to manage all three can be stressful but we try our best to manage our time.

But the journey comes with many achievements as well, like having the opportunity to participate in the Made in the Cape market at Cavendish Square – We receive so much exposure and are approached by people like Alumni Valley that help us even more! As well as opportunities to make custom products that continue to push our boundaries.

We aspire to creating larger furniture pieces, specifically from Cement with contrasts of Wood or Cork.

Between the two of us, we make a complimentary team.

Tatenda Mark: Your journey and work ethic is inspiring. Do you have words of wisdom for those who may follow a similar entrepreneurial path to yours?

Romy & Antony: Always do what inspires you and manage your time wisely!

Work with an idea, develop it and if you come across a bump in the road, work around it. There’s always a way! That’s what design is all about.
